Do you have strong strategic and managerial skills and experience in developing and running research support at a university? Do you have the clout to lead the development of SDU’s joint efforts to improve the acquisition and administration of research and innovation funding? Then you may be the new manager we are looking for.

SDU Research & Innovation Organisation (SDU RIO) seeks a Senior Consultant to take up the position August 1, 2017 or as soon as possible.

SDU’s strategic focus is to create value for, and with society. This is addressed by working closely with companies and authorities. To this end SDU established SDU RIO on 1 January 2017. SDU RIO’s mission is to assist and support the university’s external collaborations, and efforts to attract more funding for research and innovation.

SDU RIO is now looking for a head of the Joint Research Support Unit. This position is new. We are looking for an applicant with experience of strategic management, as well as own experience of research and research funding. The applicant should have solid, well-documented collaborative skills, and experience of managing and developing small groups of specialists.

You will be responsible for organising and developing SDU’s joint research support in close collaboration with the faculties’ research support units, financial units, HR and the Vice-Chancellor’s Office, as well as organising a small unit to provide advice and analysis in the research and innovation policy area.

Your areas of responsibility will include:

  • Improving SDU’s strategic efforts to increase external funding for research and innovation.
  • Organising common systems and tools to support the acquisition and administration of research/innovation funds.
  • Developing and running Pre-, At- and Post-Award support.
  • Supporting the efforts of the academic environments vis-à-vis Horizon 2020 – particularly Pillars 2 and 3 – and other international grant providers.
  • Helping to build and consolidate strong, competent and competitive consortiums.
  • Developing communication efforts related to external research and innovation funding.
  • Coordinating SDU’s participation in the relevant fora on EU funding.
  • Promoting SDU’s visibility and interests in national and international networks and partnerships.
  • Enhancing cooperation with the SDEO office in Brussels.

You will be part of SDU RIO’s executive team, working closely together with the Director of SDU RIO.

You will be working in a complex knowledge organisation with many different operators. You must therefore have a pronounced talent for understanding other people and collaboration, at the same time always sticking to your guns. You should be hardworking, conscientious, flexible and confident. It goes without saying that you will have a high level of proficiency in English.

We are offering an exciting position in a workplace characterised by ambition, dedication and an informal tone. The suitable applicant will:

  • Have managerial experience, and experience of working strategically at an executive level.
  • Have a motivational leadership style and a strong personality with natural authority.
  • Have well-documented collaborative skills and sound organisational insight into the university world.
  • Possess astute analytical skills.
  • Have experience of international research funders and programmes.
  • Have relevant experience in similar jobs and extensive knowledge and experience of the EU Framework Programmes.
  • Be able to retain a sense of the big picture when faced with parallel, complex tasks, and to work intensively under heavy pressure from deadlines.

SDU RIO was established on 1 January 2017 as part of a reorganisation process, and is part of SDU’s strategic effort in societal involvement. SDU RIO supports the interaction between research, education, the business community, and the public sector. Our work includes entrepreneurship and business development, active outreach towards companies, research support, contract law, technology exchange and patenting, career guidance for students, and the creation of contacts between companies and students. We have members of staff in all of SDU’s campus towns, though most of them are based in Odense.
